Using visual and auditory cues to locate out-of-view objects in head-mounted augmented reality

When looking for an object in a complex visual scene, Augmented Reality (AR) can assist search with cues persistently pointing the target’s direction. The effectiveness of these be reduced if they are placed at different depth plane to target indicating. To overcome this visual-depth problem, we test adding simultaneous spatialized auditory that fixed location. In experiment manipulated which cue(s) were available (visual-only vs. + auditory), and disparity relative cue was displayed on. Results show participants slower finding targets when on target. However, slowdown performance could substantially cueing. These results demonstrate importance AR cross-modal cueing under conditions uncertainty designers should consider augmenting ones.
